Tesla has issued a recall notice for a subset of Powerwall 2 home battery units in Australia. Expert Electrical Tasmania (a subsidiary of Expert Energy Tasmania Pty Ltd) is an installer of these systems, and the recall itself is run by Tesla. Not every Powerwall 2 is affected
Only a subset of Powerwall 2 units is covered by the notice: those built with certain third-party battery cells. The ACCC notice discusses units sold between 1 November 2020 and 23 August 2025, but even within that window not every unit is affected. Powerwall 3 is not part of this recall.
What the official notice says
- Tesla identified cells that may fail and overheat.
- There have been some reports of smoking or flames and minor property damage.
- No injuries are reported in the official notice.
- Most affected units have already been remotely discharged by Tesla.
What owners should do
- Keep your system online so Tesla can assess and communicate with it.
- Check the Tesla app for a notification telling you whether your unit is affected.
- Do not open, repair or attempt to service the unit yourself.
- If your unit is affected, contact the original installer to schedule a free replacement.
- Tesla considers compensation for lost energy savings on a case-by-case basis.
