Is a home battery worth it with the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate in Tasmania?

Often yes, if you already have solar (or you are installing it with the battery), you export a lot of daytime power you would rather use at night, or you care about backup when the grid drops out.

Under the federal Cheaper Home Batteries program, eligible Tasmanian homes and small businesses can get around 30% off the upfront cost of an eligible battery. The exact discount depends on usable capacity, eligibility, STC value, and installation date. The next scheduled STC factor change is January 2027.

Bigger is not always better. We size the battery to how you use power, not to a brochure pack size.

When a battery is usually worth considering in Tasmania

Tasmania’s regulated feed-in rate is more useful than in many mainland states. That slows pure “buy cheap, sell dear” payback compared with places that barely pay you for export. So the honest case here is self-use and reliability, not a magic overnight return.

A battery tends to make sense when:

  • You have solar, or you are quoting solar and battery together, and you export a lot of daytime kWh you would rather burn in the evening
  • You are on, or moving to, a time-of-use pattern where evening grid power costs more than the solar you already made
  • You want selected-circuit or whole-home backup during outages
  • You want the federal point-of-sale discount while the STC factor is still at today’s level

What the Cheaper Home Batteries rebate actually does

  • It is a federal program. Tasmania does not currently add a separate state battery subsidy on top.
  • About 30% off eligible systems at the point of sale when installed by an accredited retailer/installer (as stated on our site; last reviewed 2 September 2026).
  • The discount steps down over time with the STC factor. The next scheduled change is January 2027.
  • Eligibility and the exact dollar off depend on usable capacity and install date. We confirm that on your quote. We do not run a one-size website calculator.

Payback — what search answers say vs what we will quote you

Independent write-ups and AI answers commonly cite roughly 4–10 year payback ranges once the federal discount is applied, depending on system type and how you use power. That is a published industry range, not a promise for your house.

We will not invent a payback on a blog. On a proper quote we model your load, export, tariff, and proposed battery size.

Brands we install (examples)

We supply and install batteries including Tesla Powerwall, BYD, and Sonnen. We size them to the home, not to a sales brochure. Brand choice depends on backup needs, your existing inverter, and whether you want an all-in-one or a modular pack.

Who this is for

  • Owner-occupiers in Hobart and across Tasmania with suitable solar (existing or planned)
  • Small businesses checking eligibility under the same federal program
  • People who want an in-house electrical and solar crew, not a door-to-door national sales lead handed to a subcontractor, plus a 10-year workmanship warranty

Who this is not for

  • Renters who cannot approve a fixed battery install
  • Homes with no solar path and no plan to add panels (battery-only economics are usually weaker)
  • Anyone chasing the cheapest mainland “national brand” quote with no local aftercare

Next step

Request a callback or assessment. We check eligibility, size the battery to your usage, and apply the federal discount on the quote where you qualify.
