What The Cheaper Home Batteries Program Could Mean for Your Household in 2025

In 2025, the Australian government is set to launch the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, a $2.3 billion initiative aimed at making solar battery storage more accessible to households, businesses, and community facilities. Starting July 1, 2025, this program offers substantial rebates to encourage the adoption of home battery systems, promoting energy independence and sustainability.

What Is the Home Battery Rebate?

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount of approximately 30% on the cost of eligible home battery systems. Specifically, the rebate amounts to around $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity, applicable to systems ranging from 5kWh to 50kWh. This means households could save up to $18,500 on a 50kWh battery system.

Importantly, the program is not means-tested and is available to all eligible property owners. To qualify, the battery system must be Virtual Power Plant (VPP) capable, although participation in a VPP is not mandatory.

Benefits of the Home Batteries Program

  1. Significant Cost Savings – Households with existing solar systems can expect to save up to $1,100 annually on electricity bills by adding a battery. For those installing both solar panels and a battery, savings could reach up to $2,300 per year, potentially reducing energy bills by up to 90%.
  2. Energy Independence – By storing excess solar energy, households can reduce reliance on the grid, ensuring power availability during peak times or outages.
  3. Environmental Impact – Increased adoption of home batteries contributes to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, supporting Australia’s goal of achieving 82% renewable energy by 2030.

Cheaper Home Batteries Eligibility

To be eligible for the rebate:

  • The battery system must have a usable capacity between 5kWh and 50kWh.
  • The system must be installed by an accredited installer and be VPP-capable.
  • The battery must be connected to a new or existing rooftop solar system.
  • Only one rebate is available per eligible property, but owners of multiple properties can apply for each.

How The Rebate Works

So, how does the rebate work? The Cheaper Home Batteries Program rebate is delivered via the federal government’s existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which provides financial incentives for eligible renewable energy installations. Under this scheme, households can receive an upfront discount—estimated at around $372 per usable kilowatt-hour (kWh) of battery storage—helping significantly reduce the cost of installing a home battery system.

Although the official start date for the program is 1 July 2025, systems installed as early as 6 April 2025 may still qualify—so long as they are not commissioned (i.e., activated or connected) until the program officially launches. This gives early adopters a valuable head start while still ensuring they receive the full benefit of the rebate. To be eligible, the battery must meet technical standards, be installed by a certified professional, and be capable of operating within a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), even if you don’t join one right away.
