Solar payback in Tasmania: what actually moves the maths

Solar in Tasmania pays for itself when the power you stop buying from the grid outweighs what you paid after rebates. How long that takes depends on your tariff, how much daytime power you use, the feed-in rate on what you export, system size, and the upfront discount. We will not invent a single payback number for “a typical Hobart home” on this page. On a real quote we model your bill and usage.

What “payback” means here

Payback is the time until bill savings and export credits (and any other agreed benefits on your quote) cover what you paid after STCs and other eligible discounts. It is not a government guarantee. It is not the same for a coolstore, a rental, and a family home that is empty all day.

If someone quotes you a fixed “X years for every Tasmanian roof,” treat that as marketing until they show the assumptions.

What moves the maths in Tasmania

1. How much you pay to import power

Every kilowatt-hour you use from your own panels is a kilowatt-hour you do not buy at the retail usage rate. Higher import rates and time-of-use patterns that hit hard in the evening change the value of self-use. Talk to your retailer about your tariff (including Tariff 93 versus a flat rate where it fits). 2. How much daytime power you actually use

An array that mostly exports while you are at work, then leaves you buying grid power for dinner and heating, pays back slower than the same roof on a house that runs heat-pump hot water, laundry, and daytime loads under the sun. Shifting flexible loads into solar hours is often the cheapest “upgrade” because it uses hardware you already have. See Use, store or export.

3. Feed-in tariff on what you export

The Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator sets a minimum feed-in tariff. From 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 that floor is 9.276 cents per kWh. Some retailers pay more (for example Solstice has paid 11 cents per kWh). Export is useful. It is rarely a reason, on its own, to oversize the system and skip self-use. Import rates are still usually much higher than feed-in.

4. System size matched to the house

Too small and you keep buying grid power you could have covered. Too large and you dump a lot at feed-in rates. Payback follows the match between generation and your load shape, not the biggest quote on the table. Our sizing guide: How many solar panels do you need in Tasmania?

5. Upfront discount (STCs)

Federal Small-scale Technology Certificates still cut the installed price of eligible solar. Treat the discount as part of the capital cost on the quote, not a separate “bonus year” bolted on later. Exact STC value moves with the market and the install date. We show it on the proposal rather than baking a website calculator into this article.

6. Batteries (only when the evening load says so)

A battery does not create more solar. It moves surplus into the evening. That can improve self-use when you export a lot and buy back after dark. Eligible batteries can get around 30% off under the Australian Government Cheaper Home Batteries program, depending on usable capacity, eligibility, STC value, and install date. What we will put on your quote (and what we will not)

On an assessment we look at recent bills or interval data, roof and shading, switchboard limits, and planned loads (EV, heat pump, home business). Then we show a projected payback for that design with the assumptions written down.

We will not publish a one-size payback year on this blog. We will not promise “solar pays for itself in X years for every Tasmanian home.”
