At Expert Electrical Tasmania, we know that Tasmanians are looking to protect themselves from blackout situations, enjoy off-grid living, or looking to assist in EV Charging overnight.

We offer competitively priced lithium storage solutions supplied by leading companies without compromising on quality. To install home energy storage, a home assessment is required and the savings you make depend from home to home. Home energy storage or battery storage is an excellent idea because while your panels soak up the most amount of sun during the day, the typical household uses the most energy at night. Battery storage means you can make use of your own electricity after you’ve stored it.

All of our SMA Inverter Solar Systems are battery ready. Once fully integrated they are designed to be self-managing and require very little maintenance or attention. The advantage to having a battery as part of your system is that you can draw your stored energy at any point in time. It can be drawn for energy requirements on the premises or be released back into the grid for further rebates so it can be refilled during the day.

Battery ready / Battery compatible / Battery capable

What’s the difference?

Not much is the answer despite all of the different terms there are really only two types:

AC Coupled

There are two types of AC Coupled systems:

Hybrid inverters

These systems can plug into a battery through a Battery Management System (BMS) that then converts the power back to DC at an optimum voltage for charging the battery. For the casual observer it looks like the battery is plugged directly into the solar inverter.

All other Solar inverters

(An AC coupled system using a standard inverter)

These systems mean that if you want to install a battery later on you need to by a battery and an inverter for the battery (if you by a Tesla the inverter for the battery is hidden in the case). An AC coupled system generally is wired into your switchboard and monitors the electricity production of the solar inverter and the consumption of the house allowing it to charge from excess solar and then discharge into the house when more power is needed.

DC Coupled

(also just called hybrid inverters to add to your confusion)

With a DC coupled system power to charge your battery comes directly from the solar side of the solar inverter and also uses the solar inverter to change the power from the battery from DC (all batteries are DC) to AC power that you can use in your home.

The question you need to ask is, is the inverter a hybrid inverter, in other words can I plug a battery directly into the inverter later?

PowerPlus Energy

We supply their Australian made pre-wired cabinets, modular batteries and the no fuss Amphenol connectors save time and hassle for 1 or 3 phase inverters. Being scalable you can have 1 to 100 (and beyond) batteries linked in parallel, and for larger jobs you can run parallel cabinets too. The PowerPlus Energy batteries come with a 10 year performance warranty of 60-80% (product depending) and a 10 year product warranty.

BYD

We supply and install the modular BYD Battery-Boxes that are compatible with 1 and 3 phase inverters. The BYD Battery-Boxes provide reliable energy storage which is one of the most efficient for and cost effective energy storage solutions. The BYD Battery-Boxes come with a 10 year performance warranty of 60% and a 10 year product warranty.

Tesla

Our Tesla accredited retailer partnership allows us to offer Tasmanians their Powerwall 2. Tesla batteries are “touch safe” and can be stacked up to a maximum of 10, but one alone is often large enough to manage a household in the case of blackouts and overnight energy use. The Tesla Powerwall 2 comes with a 10 year product warranty.

FAQs

What is battery storage for?

Battery storage is used to store the energy that your solar panels collect throughout the day, so you can use it at a later point.

What are the benefits?

Using battery storage can reduce your energy consumption from the mains grid by 80% depending on your type of home, the size, and the area in which you live. It’s an economic choice as it saves cash on your electricity bill and it’s an environmentally friendly choice as you’re reducing your contribution to the coal industry and your carbon footprint.

Is battery storage worth it?

Battery storage will definitely reduce your electricity bill, though by how much depends from house to house.

How do I know what size battery to get?

There are many things to consider when choosing which sized battery to go with. Consider details like: how much you’re willing to spend, how many days you’d like to go without needing a recharge. It’s always a good idea to chat with an expert like Expert Electrical.
